![]() While some newspapers have written that GPS devices are omitted from the new law, they DO come within the reach of VTL 1225-d as a “handheld device with mobile data access” or as a “portable computing device”. If it is built into your vehicle or affixed to the surface of your vehicle, however, it is not a “handheld” or “portable” device and exempt from this law.Īnother issue is whether motorists can “check” their device while stopped at a red light. The new law prohibits using your electronic device while the car is “in motion”. I expect that most courts will interpret “in motion” to mean when the motorist is behind the wheel with the car in “Drive”. Therefore, stopping at a light is “in motion”. I highly recommend pulling over to a legal parking spot if you need to text or otherwise use an electronic device.įinally, I expect motorist using legal mp3 devices to also be wrongly ticketed. Under VTL 12225-d(2)(a), the term “Portable electronic device” is defined as “any hand-held mobile telephone, as defined by subdivision one of section twelve hundred twenty-five-c of this article, personal digital assistant (PDA), handheld device with mobile data access, laptop computer, pager, broadband personal communication device, two-way messaging device, electronic game, or portable computing device.” It does NOT mention mp3 players and, therefore, does not prohibit their use (unless of course it also has computing, gaming or texting capacity like an iTouch device). GPS devices present an interesting question. The new law fixes this issue and, in my opinion, will lead to rash of tickets. Therefore, I expect a rash of tickets being issued by officers who will not be bothered ascertaining what use the motorist was making for his or her device. In fact, I was just emailed yesterday by a motorist who was issued a VTL 1225-d ticket for texting. However, he merely pushed the speaker button on his cell phone to hear a call while it was legally sitting on his console.ĭon’t be fooled by the lack of tickets being issued under the old texting and driving law. That law contained a major loophole (first identified by me in October 2009) which made it difficult to enforce. Given this presumption of guilt, I envision many motorists who are holding an iPhone or Adroid being issued a ticket even though they may be legally using it to make or receive a telephone call. The word “use” in the new law intentionally omits talking or listening to phone calls (VTL 1225-c governs driving and using an electronic device as a phone, and authorizes using a “hands-free” mobile phone). ![]() Therefore, if a police officer sees you just holding or fidgeting with an electronic while you are behind the wheel, he can issue you a ticket and YOU will be responsible for proving that you were not using it (as opposed to the other way around). Out-Of-State Driver with a NY Traffic TicketĪnyone found guilty of violating the new law prohibiting texting and driving will be assessed 3 points and a fine of up to $150. I recently had a chance to review the portable electronic device law and, overall, I am concerned about a floodgate of wrongly-issued tickets being handed out.įirst off, keep in mind that, under VTL 1225-d, the mere holding of a device while driving gives rise to a presumption of use.NYC Leaving the Scene of an Accident OATH Ticket.

There’s some debate as to who was the first operator to get into the big herds. Chuck Morrison Collection, Casper College Western History Center. He ended up breeding them instead.Ī sheepherder on the Burke Ranch north of Casper. In 1870, for example, Thomas Durbin brought 900 Mexican sheep – Churros – into Cheyenne for the purpose of turning them into mutton. The sheep industry in Wyoming had modest beginnings. The 1862 Report of the Commissioner of Agriculture estimated that the “cost of keeping sheep was only half as great in the West as in the East.” This drove sheep production west, where grass was free on the public domain. This meant that people who wanted to make money in the sheep business had to be low-cost producers. According to a report from the American Historical Association, sheep production after the war, between 18, fell by 75 percent in the mid-Atlantic states and by 25 percent nationwide. The global supply of wool increased more than a third between 18 a large part of the gain occurred in the first half of the decade, “when the cotton famine was present,” Chester Whitney Wright noted in Wool Growing and the Tariff.Īfter the war, demand plummeted and prices crashed. According to Levi Edgar Young’s The Founding of Utah, a Mormon pioneer company that left Omaha in July 1847 and arrived in Salt Lake City on September 19 included 358 sheep.ĭuring the Civil War, high demand for wool for uniforms led to high prices, which encouraged production worldwide. Small numbers arrived in Wyoming as early as 1847 but they, like their owners, were transient. It took a while for the notion to catch on: The eastern states and Ohio raised most of America’s sheep. Still, many a savvy 19 th century Wyoming flockmaster made a great deal of money in the wool, lamb and mutton business. When historian Frederick Jackson Turner, in his famous Significance of the Frontier in American History essay, describes "the progression of civilization” marching past Cumberland Gap, he mentions “buffalo following the trail to the salt springs, the Indian, the fur-trader and hunter, the cattle-raiser, the pioneer farmer”-but doesn’t say a word about sheep. Sheep ranching in Wyoming or the West simply never earned the same cachet as running cattle. It must have taken financial restraint not to get into cattle, and instead invest in sheep. ![]() Some contrarians took stock in sheep, when the sheep business was still the financial ugly duckling of the range. Not everyone was seduced by the cattle boom, however. Cattle prices topped $7 per hundredweight that year, a historical high. Okie and a handful of others benefited from auspicious timing. The sheep business in Wyoming would gradually diminish to a mere shadow of what it was during Okie’s day. But there would be no more decades of steady, strong wool and lamb prices, and the free-grass, open-range system that had made the early booms possible was dwindling fast. The state still had millions of sheep, and some operators were still making money despite the Depression. What made him remarkable was his ability to catch the Wyoming sheep-raising wave at the right time and ride it until he died, in 1930.īy then, sheep raising in Wyoming was twenty years past its prime. Silas Reed, surveyor general of Wyoming Territory, from his report for 1871. “There seems to be no doubt that the vast quality of mutton can be grown here, pound for pound, as cheap as beef and, if so, then sheep-raising must be profitable if cattle-raising is.” ![]() ![]() So if this is true then how is someone selling what appear to be fully working SCBO files? We need to dig deeper and reverse the EFI code responsible for processing this file.Īnd now let’s start the real reverse engineering fun! It would be a surprise if this kind of check wasn’t implemented and anyone could modify the SCBO contents. This provides us with another bit of information – that there is some kind of integrity check on the SCBO contents. The computer will process the file and reset the system, but the password isn’t reset. ![]() If we set a firmware password on a test Mac, generate the necessary string, and modify the SCBO accordingly, nothing will happen. Now that we know a bit more about its contents, can the sample SCBO be modified and reused to reset any other Mac’s firmware password? I know this because I had already reversed Apple’s Firmware Password Utility and observed its communications with the kernel extensions that set the EFI NVRAM variables. The first digits are the machine serial number as previously described, and the last sixteen digits are a nonce value regenerated every time the firmware password is set, removed, or modified. This is the string Apple support needs, and this is the same string we see inside the SCBO file. ![]() To obtain the necessary information, you must hold SHIFT + CONTROL + OPTION + COMMAND + S on the firmware password prompt screen and a string will be generated. How are the SCBO files generated?Īs previously mentioned, Apple support is able to generate these files after you provide some key information. The rest of the string and binary data that follows are unknown for now. This information can be verified because part of this string can be found in the motherboard of each Mac (my sample is only composed of MacBooks but I guess iMacs and others will contain the same information). It appears to be some kind of serial number. A couple of bytes later and we see another string. The ‘SCBO’ string is clearly visible in the first four bytes, which is a magic number (0x4F424353). This picture shows us the full contents of the sample file. So let’s start another EFI reversing engineering adventure…Īt the time I could only find a single SCBO file on the Internet, which is bad (impossible to visualise differences between files) but better than no file at all. Understanding how SCBO files work in the first place was also intriguing. If this were true, it would imply that Apple’s EFI contains a significant vulnerability. The core question I wanted to answer was if it was really possible for someone to build a SCBO file key generator. Upon my return from SyScan360 Singapore, I needed a new research di‐ rection to kickstart my brain back into work, and this fit the bill. Since there was (still holds true) virtually no information about the SCBO contents, this aroused my curiosity but I never followed up until now. There are videos (in Portuguese but you can watch the whole process) of people claiming this works, and even some claims about an universal SCBO that unlocks multiple Macs. Things got more interesting when I found a website that allegedly sold the SCBO files – just send them the necessary hash (more on this later), pay USD100, and get a working SCBO file in return. Since I don’t have the original sales receipt of this specific Mac, I assume this option isn’t possible, since anyone with a stolen Mac could get the password reset. The normal process workflow is to first contact Apple support. My preliminary research found references to a “magical” SCBO file that could be loaded onto a USB flash drive and booted to remove the password. My original goal when I started poking around Apple’s EFI implementation was to find a way to reset a Mac‐ Book’s firmware password. ![]() GNU Image Manipulation Program, is a free and open source image editor. Phillips got his start in radio, working in Decatur and Nashville, and, finally, in 1945, making it to Memphis, his version of what Paris was for Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein. His father was a flagman on a railroad bridge over the Tennessee River. He was born, in 1923, in a small place in Alabama called Lovelace Community, not far from Muscle Shoals. In the beginning, Phillips had not planned to run a record company. But he helped identify an audience, and that audience transformed the industry and the nature of popular music. ![]() He recorded a style of music that the major record companies-there were six of them when he started out, and they dominated the national market-had deemed unprofitable. ![]() He had a regional business, little access to capital, and no reliable distribution system for his product. In twenty-first-century terms, Phillips was an industry disrupter. No one contributed more to the job than Sam Phillips, the founder of Sun Records, in Memphis, and the man who discovered Elvis Presley. Coming up with that sound, the sound of unrehearsed exuberance, took a lot of work, a lot of rehearsing. As with any musical genre, it boils down to a certain sound. There’s no show-biz fakery coming between you and the music. Rock and roll feels uninhibited, spontaneous, and fun. You can add horns and strings and backup singers, and you can add a lot more chords, but the important thing is the feeling. The instrumentation and the arrangements are usually simple: three or four instruments and, frequently, about the same number of chords. The learning curve for performing the stuff is short the learning curve for appreciating it is nonexistent. To this way of thinking, rock and roll-the music associated with performers like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and the early Beatles-is music that anyone can play (or can imagine playing) and everyone can dance to. “I felt,” she concluded, “that I could do that.” For many people, that response is the essence of rock and roll. She found herself making a cold appraisal of his performance. As she described the concert in her memoir “Just Kids,” everyone was transfixed by Jim Morrison, except for her.
